Things To Compare About What Is Radioactivity

Radioactive iodine can be released into the atmosphere after a nuclear meltdown and inhaled into the body (what is going on in Japan). It can contaminate the food and water supply (they’re very worried about this in Japan). This can then be ingested into the body.

In the event that a level seven nuclear power plant accident takes place, the people, land and everything within 20 to 30 kilometer radius around the plant’s vicinity are contaminated by a combination of radioactive substances. The latter enters the body by means of skin penetration, inhalation of contaminated air and/or through the consumption of contaminated food or water.

What does this have to do with what is radioactivity?

The thyroid gland absorbs radioactive iodine very quickly which can achieve a whole array of serious health problems. The Chernobyl crisis led to a drastic rise in cancer and other radiation related diseases for many people living in the area.

im in grade nine what is radioactivity (simply so i can understND)

  • Radioactivity refers to the particles which are emitted from nuclei as a result of nuclear instability. Because the nucleus experiences the intense conflict between the two strongest forces in nature, it should not be surprising that there are many nuclear isotopes which are unstable and emit some kind of radiation. The most common types of radiation are called alpha, beta, and gamma radiation, but there are several other varieties of radioactive decay. Radioactive decay rates are normally stated in terms of their half-lives, and the half-life of a given nuclear species is related to its radiation risk. The different types of radioactivity lead to different decay paths which transmute the nuclei into other chemical elements. Examining the amounts of the decay products makes possible radioactive dating. Radiation from nuclear sources is distributed equally in all directions, obeying the inverse square law.

  • radioactivity is a gas or something like that ,that can kills you if u breath in it much time and you can have serious problems with that!!

  • what everyone else said 😀

  • Radioactivity is a phenomenon in which certain substances emit radiations spontaneously. This happens when an isotope is unstable Unstability means the neutron to proton ratio is greater than 1.5.The radiations emitted are alpha, beta and gamma. When alpha particles or beta particles are emitted the atom can adjust the neutron to proton ratio to be one or less than 1,5 so that they become stable.

  • Non radioactive iodine is a salt of stable iodine in medicinal form (Potassium Iodide). It is available as a capsule, a tablet, or in liquid drops form. The thyroid gland needs stable iodine in this form to make thyroid hormones.

After taking iodine in a medicinal tablet, capsule, or liquid drops form the thyroid gland absorbs the non radio active iodine. The body can not mean the difference between radioactive, and non radioactive iodine. When you consume non radioactive iodine the thyroid gland becomes ‘full’ and it wont be in a position to absorb any radioactive iodine, and eventually will be expelled in your urine. A capsule remains effective for approximately 24 hours.

It must be noted that iodine tablets cannot stop radioactive iodine from entering the body. They can only offer protection of the thyroid gland.

Although iodized salt does contain stable iodine, it doesn’t have enough to offer protection against radiation exposure. So, salt isn’t a sufficient alternative if you’re afraid of radiation exposure.

Taking higher doses that what the bottle recommends doesn’t offer more protection from radiation poisoning.
